Do you plan God around your life, or do you plan your life around your walk with God? Knowing God has always been the purpose of human existence — and to know him not just as our Creator, but intimately as our Father who has spoken tenderly to us by his Word (John 17:3; Rom 8:15). His presence and his Word is our life, joy, and peace. Thus, we should orient our entire lives around knowing him and obeying him (Luke 11:28).

The truth is, since our first parents fell into sin, we have not given God the attention or obedience he deserves. We have run from God rather than running to him, and our disobedience has separated us from the Father. Yet God graciously welcomes us back into relationship with himself through Jesus Christ and his gospel (John 14:6). Now, in Christ and by the Spirit whom he has sent into our hearts, God invites us (1) to boldly come to him as his adopted children, (2) to walk with him daily in holiness, and (3) to have conversation with him in all of life through Word and prayer (2 Cor 6:16). “The church is not like a family; it is a family. The church is not a building; it’s a people.” These are not merely trendy sayings but fundamental to what Jesus purchased by his sacrifice and what the Holy Spirit birthed. Now that we have been graciously adopted into the family of God (Matt 12:48–50; Rom 8:15), we are called to love and serve one another sacrificially as Christ has loved us (Eph 5:2).

Therefore, we no longer act as merely individuals, but as family. This means: (1) Every single person is valuable and needed. Without each person playing his or her essential role, we cannot become fully mature (Eph 4:16). (2) We are transparent about our sins and struggles (Gal 6:1–2). What is the mission of the church? Before Jesus ascended to the throne of God, he commanded his people to make disciples of all kinds of people (Matt 28:18–20; Acts 1:8). This work of making and maturing disciples of Jesus is not only work for paid professionals; rather, it should be part of the ordinary Christian life.

At All Peoples Church, we emphasize a handful of truths about this mission: (1) We cannot do this alone: we need to prayerfully depend on the Holy Spirit (John 15:5). (2) We intentionally keep our church structure simple so we can give more of ourselves to this great work (1 Cor 9:19–23).
